Which social media platforms are beneficial in education?

In determining which selection of social media platforms are beneficial in education, it essentially narrows in on each platform’s tools and functions and which of those work to create a smoother teaching environment within the education industry. Particularly with the rising popularity and necessity for online learning due to current circumstances throughout the past few years as a result of COVID, the scope of education has been opened up towards a larger network online that promotes communication and networking.

One of the more notable social media platforms seen through educational usage has been Youtube; a platform where users can broadcast their choice of content in the form of videos towards their chosen audiences. This platform has become quite commonly incorporated within teaching methods by displaying other educational videos for learning purposes so as to expand from textbook resources; and in more recent years, utilizing the creator tool to record lessons or class materials to maximize the online learning experience. While the platform itself serves more purpose for the creator to communicate their content toward their respective audiences, it continues to be an effective tool for educators and students to share their work whilst expanding their PLN portfolio simultaneously.

Another platform that is more commonly used throughout the education industry would be Google platforms such as Google Meet, Forms, Classroom, Workspace, and more. The company has developed many of their applications to be suitable for business, educational, or personal use, all of which is quite user friendly among all ages. While it is all categorized under one profile tied with the user’s Google profile, the various applications help educators connect with their students and allow for discussions and lessons to be more productive and run more smoothly with the increase of online learning.

While some still prefer a more traditional face-to-face learning method strictly confined to the classroom setting, the amount of increased opportunities through online platforms and PLN’s does encourage individuals to learn and understand the functions of social media platforms. By increasing the incorporation of media platforms within the learning environment, it can go forward to aid students with future opportunities, as well as propelling the education industry towards a more modernized and convenient form of teaching and communication.
